Tradition Meets Modern Minimalism
Nestled within the rustic charm of an old barn, this Finnish sauna has been thoughtfully reimagined to balance modern design with historical roots. The renovation celebrates contrasts: glass and concrete meet weathered wood, creating a dialogue between past and present. The layout emphasizes openness and symmetry, crafting a serene flow through spaces designed for relaxation and connection.
Timeless Design Rooted in Tradition
The sauna’s design centers on simplicity and authenticity.
Despite the low ceiling, the space feels expansive and airy, with its rhythm defined by sturdy original columns. Upon entering, the lounge greets visitors with its warm atmosphere, while the sauna room remains slightly tucked away for privacy. A glass wall allows visual connection between the two spaces, with the glow of the fireplace visible from the sauna benches. The washing areas continue the minimalist approach, embracing traditional methods with water basins and ladles instead of showers.
Material Palette: Honest and Authentic
The materials honor the barn’s history while integrating modern touches. Existing concrete, spruce wood, lime paint, and dark metal form a restrained palette that feels tactile and genuine. Original barn elements, such as the concrete drinking cups for the cattle, were preserved, blending seamlessly with the new design. Built-in furniture adds a refined elegance, while touches of Japanese onsen inspiration are evident in the minimalist aesthetics and serene atmosphere.
Serenity Framed by Tradition
Lighting as an Artform
The lighting design, developed in collaboration with SAAS Instruments, balances function and atmosphere. Equal importance was given to what remains unlit, preserving the space’s subtlety and avoiding overexposure. A combination of indirect and targeted light creates depth and texture, while dimming capabilities allow the lighting to shift with the time of day and mood.
Natural light flows symmetrically through windows along the barn’s long sides during the day, often making artificial light unnecessary. In the evening, minimalist lighting levels help retain the ambiance of the old barn, emphasizing dimness and darkness to enhance its original character. The use of minimal lighting creates a harmonious balance between candles, the fireplace, and carefully placed fixtures, transforming the space into a warm, tranquil retreat.

A Quiet Harmony
Every design element was chosen to create a space that feels timeless and balanced. The barn’s natural patina, combined with dark tones, contrasts, and the interplay of light and shadow, fosters a deep sense of peace and authenticity. The sauna embodies both tradition and modernity, offering a space where visitors can truly unwind.
Most importantly, the löyly — oxygen-rich and perfectly humid — delivers a quintessential Finnish sauna experience.
